Higher Education
Dan’s whole career has centered on higher education. Since accepting his first academic position at Blackburn College in Illinois in 1965, Dan has had the opportunity to serve in nearly every academic leadership position: Faculty member, department chair, founder/director of two public policy research centers, associate dean, dean, provost, and president.
Following his tenure as President of the University of Toledo, Dan was invited to come to the United Arab Emirates where he led Zayed University as Provost and Chief Operating Officer. In that position, he reported to the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research and had responsibility for the University’s two campuses: One in Dubai and the other in Abu Dhabi. During Dan’s tenure at Zayed University, they built a billion-dollar, futuristic campus in Abu Dhabi.
Dan’s passion has been improving the quality of leadership in higher education. He has been called on to serve as a mentor, advisor, and coach to presidents in several states across the nation. He believes strong leadership of our nation’s universities will become increasingly important in the challenging but opportunity-filled years ahead.
As a leader in higher education, Dan continues to assist university boards, presidents, senior administrative leaders, provosts and deans with such challenging issues as…
- Board governance and policy
- Board/President relations
- Presidential and senior-level searches
- Coaching and mentoring new and seasoned presidents
- Strategic Planning and Implementation
- Outreach and community engagement
- Economic development
